From Kitchen Hobby to Westport Icon

Marlene, tell us a bit about yourself and the soul of your business.
I’m Marlene Foy, born and raised just outside the beautiful town of Westport. My business, Marlene’s Chocolate Haven, has been my life since 2004. What started as a hobby in my kitchen is now what I fill my days with—making handmade chocolates that are truly unlike any others in the world.

What makes your chocolate different from the rest?
It’s the personal touch. My heart and soul go into every bite. The taste, quality, and service are unique because it’s me. I love the creative freedom of inventing new ideas and exploring them with my customers. It’s about bringing that feeling of home and nostalgia to life.

The Reality of the "Sweet Life"

What do you love most about running your own business?
My products bring families and friends together. Whether it’s a big occasion or just a quiet meet-up, knowing I’m helping people make memories for life is the best feeling. I love being able to tailor-make products to my customers' needs—it’s shopping local at its finest.

And the parts that aren't so sweet?
The long hours! It can be physically exhausting, especially during the busy holiday seasons when you’re on your feet for hours on end. It’s a sacrifice, but one I’m happy to make for the business.

"Every day is a school day. Business changes all the time, and you can never have enough information—you have to keep learning."

Advice for Fellow Entrepreneurs

What would you say to other women thinking of starting their own journey?
Research your product until you know it inside out. And don’t be afraid to ask for help—whether it’s professional advice or support from family and friends to get you set up initially.

How can we best support small Irish businesses in 2026?
Visit local markets whenever you travel to a new town! Online, I’m a huge fan of Just Buy Irish and Guaranteed Irish. These platforms make it so easy to choose local over global.

Finally, how do you unwind?
When time allows, I love to walk, read, and travel. And if I need a laugh, I always tune into the Dermot and Dave (Today FM) podcasts—they always help me see the lighter side of the world!
