How Much Should You Spend on Secret Santa in Ireland?

Secret Santa works best when everybody knows the budget before names are drawn.

There is no official amount you are supposed to spend, but for most groups in Ireland the sensible range is usually somewhere between €10 and €25.

Is €10 enough for Secret Santa?

Yes, particularly for a large workplace, sports club or group where the point is mainly to take part.

At €10, keep the gift simple. Chocolate, biscuits, a small useful item or something connected to an interest you know they have will normally work better than a novelty gift bought purely for a laugh.

Is €20 a good Secret Santa budget?

€20 is probably the easiest Secret Santa budget.

It is enough to buy something that feels like a proper gift without creating pressure for people to spend heavily. It also gives you more options if you barely know the person you have drawn.

What about €25 or €30?

That can work well for a smaller team, close friends or family Secret Santa.

Once the budget reaches €25–€30, you can usually choose one stronger gift rather than several small novelty items.

Is €50 too much for Secret Santa?

For an ordinary workplace Secret Santa, usually yes.

A €50 limit can make what is supposed to be an easy Christmas activity feel like another major expense. It is more appropriate for close family or a small friend group where everyone has explicitly agreed to it.

How much should you spend on a work Secret Santa?

For most workplaces, €15–€20 is a sensible range.

It is high enough to avoid disposable novelty gifts but low enough that taking part should not feel uncomfortable.

What if I don't know the colleague very well?

Choose something neutral and easy to enjoy.

Food, chocolate, books, coffee or tea-related gifts and other small treats are generally safer than perfume, clothing, jokes about age or anything very personal.

We have a separate guide specifically for this situation: Secret Santa Gifts Ireland: For a Colleague You Don't Know.

Should you spend exactly the full amount?

No. A €20 limit means do not go significantly over €20; it does not mean you need to manufacture an extra purchase to reach exactly €20.00.

A well-chosen €17 gift is better than a €20 gift with three unnecessary items added to it.

The simplest Secret Santa rule

Agree the budget in advance, stay reasonably close to it and buy something the recipient can actually use or enjoy.

The purpose is to make Christmas at work or with friends more enjoyable — not to create another competition over who spent the most.
