International Literacy Day 2026: More Than Just a Love of Books

Would there be a huge hole in your life without books? Here at The Book Resort, we aren't just passionate about reading; we are advocates for it. Our mission stems from years of experiencing the knowledge, escapism, and pure happiness that books offer. But on September 8th, we step outside our "reading bubbles" to recognize International Literacy Day.

What is International Literacy Day?

Founded by UNESCO in 1967, International Literacy Day was created to remind the world that literacy is not a luxury—it is a basic human right. Despite living in a digital age, it is estimated that over 750 million adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills. This is a global challenge that affects every community, including those here in Ireland.

The Invisible Impact of Literacy

Think about your daily routine. Without the ability to read, you could not:

  • Navigate a weekly food shop or read nutritional labels.
  • Understand medical prescriptions or safety instructions.
  • Sit a driving test or apply for most jobs.
  • Enjoy the connection and insight of a blog post like this.

Why Your Passion Matters

For those of us who feel the "euphoric joy" of opening a brand-new book, it’s easy to take our ability to read for granted. Reading is our gateway to different worlds, but for many, that gate is locked. Recognizing our privilege is the first step toward making a difference. By celebrating literacy, we acknowledge that it is the foundation of a free, empowered, and sustainable society.

How Can You Help in 2026?

Literacy issues aren't just "far afield"; they exist in every corner of the world. Here are small ways you can make a big impact:

  • Donate Your Books: Pass on the magic. Give your finished books to local libraries, charity shops, or "Little Free Library" hubs.
  • Encourage New Readers: Support those in your community who may be struggling. Literacy hubs and adult education centers are always looking for advocates.
  • Share the Experience: Talk about the books you love. Whether through a Book Club or social media, spreading the word creates a culture that values reading.
  • Support Local: Continue to buy from independent Irish booksellers and makers who prioritise community education.

Whatever you decide to do this September 8th, make sure you spread awareness. Literacy is the key to a brighter future, so let’s keep the conversation—and the reading—going!
