A Non-Linear Journey Through Memory

Kate Elizabeth Russell’s debut was a well-deserved New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller. The narrative structure is brilliantly haunting, transporting the reader back and forth across nearly two decades.

We see Vanessa Wye as a fifteen-year-old at boarding school, falling into what she believes is a deep romance with her forty-two-year-old English teacher, Jacob Strane. We then jump to 2017, where a 32-year-old Vanessa is forced to re-evaluate her past as Strane faces a wave of abuse allegations from other former students.

The Illusion of Consent

What makes this novel so "utterly consuming" is Vanessa's internal struggle. Even in the present day, she initially resists the "victim" label. Strane used sophisticated grooming tactics, convincing her that she was the one in charge. Russell expertly highlights the naivety of the teenage mind, showing how Vanessa took Strane’s manipulations as gospel while his actions were undeniably sinister.

When another victim contacts her, Vanessa's world is turned upside down. The novel follows her as she tries to unearth the truth: that her "great love story" was actually a case of systemic exploitation.

"This book raises so many questions about victim blaming and consent—it is impossible not to get sucked in. A spine-shivering novel." — The Book Resort Team

Innocence and Vulnerability

Russell offers incredible insight into Vanessa’s isolation. By convincing her she was the only one who truly "stood out," Strane effectively distanced Vanessa from her parents and peers. Vanessa believed her situation was her own choice, a tragic misconception that many survivors of grooming will recognize.

Final Thoughts: An Important Eye-Opener

My Dark Vanessa does not offer the comfort of an easy read or a happy ending. Instead, it offers a striking, necessary balance. You feel Vanessa's "love" for Strane while simultaneously seeing the clear evidence of abuse. It is an intelligently written, raw masterpiece that will stay with you long after the final page.
